Matte & Woodfree Label Paper
Uncoated woodfree paper you can write on with pen or pencil — the natural, matte alternative to coated stock.
What is matte woodfree label paper?
Matte woodfree (also called uncoated vellum or offset paper) has no clay coating. The fibre surface is left open, so ink and pencil graphite are absorbed rather than sitting on top. That makes the label writable with ballpoint, pencil and most markers, and gives a soft, non-reflective, natural appearance that scans well under bright light.
It is the standard facestock for laboratory, filing, address and inventory labels, and it is increasingly used for organic food, wine and craft brands that want a paper-like, uncoated aesthetic. Because the surface is absorbent, expect slightly less dot sharpness than semi-gloss — compensate with a coarser screen or by printing digital.

Frequently asked questions
- Can matte woodfree be printed on a laser printer?
- Yes, in sheet form. Uncoated woodfree tolerates fuser temperatures well, which is why it is the usual facestock for A4 office sheet labels.
- How is woodfree different from kraft?
- Both are uncoated. Woodfree is bleached white and smooth; kraft is unbleached brown (or bleached white kraft) with a coarser, more fibrous look used for a rustic effect.
- Will ink smudge on uncoated paper?
- Water-based inks absorb and dry quickly. UV flexo and digital toner sit slightly higher; add a matte varnish if the label will be handled heavily.
