What is metallized label paper?
Metallized paper carries a microscopically thin layer of aluminium, vacuum-deposited onto a lacquered paper surface and then top-lacquered in clear (silver) or tinted yellow (gold). The metal layer reflects light like foil, so a single flexo or offset pass produces a full metallic label — far cheaper per label than hot-foil stamping and much faster to run.
Printing over metallized paper needs inks formulated for non-absorbent surfaces: UV flexo, UV offset or a suitable digital toner. Leaving areas unprinted reveals the metal, which is how most beverage, cosmetics and spirits labels achieve their brushed-metal look.

Frequently asked questions
- Is metallized paper the same as foil?
- No. Foil is a separate film applied by stamping. Metallized paper has the aluminium layer built into the facestock, so the whole label is metallic and it runs as ordinary paper stock on press.
- Will metallized labels survive an ice bucket?
- With a wet-strength metallized grade and a suitable adhesive, yes for several hours. For prolonged immersion use metallized BOPP film instead.
- Can it be recycled?
- The aluminium layer is very thin and most paper mills accept metallized paper, but confirm with your local stream; a metallized BOPP alternative is better suited to plastic recycling.
