Semi-gloss paper and white BOPP cover the majority of prime label volume. The decision is rarely about print quality — both print cleanly — and almost always about how the label is handled, filled and stored after it leaves the press.

Choose Semi-gloss coated paper when
- Dry ambient packaging: cartons, dry goods, bakery, shipping and warehouse labels.
- High-volume runs where material cost per square metre dominates the quote.
- Applications that need a natural, uncoated or matte print appearance.
- Labels that must go into a paper or board recycling stream with the pack.
Choose White BOPP film when
- Chilled, wet or condensation-exposed packs such as beverages and fresh food.
- Squeezable HDPE or PP bottles where a paper label would crack or lift.
- Personal care and household chemical packs exposed to oils and surfactants.
- Labels that need to survive handling, scuffing and washdown for months.
Frequently asked questions
- Can semi-gloss paper be used on cold or refrigerated packs?
- Only with a freezer-grade adhesive and no direct water contact. Condensation on a chilled pack will soften the paper edge over time; a film facestock is the safer construction for wet chill and ice-water immersion.
- Is white BOPP always more expensive than paper?
- Per square metre, yes. Total cost can be lower when film prevents relabelling, rejected pallets or returns, because a single failed batch usually costs more than the material premium across an entire run.
- Which one prints better for high-detail artwork?
- Both reproduce fine detail. Coated paper gives slightly higher ink hold-out for offset work; top-coated white BOPP gives a cleaner, brighter background and better resistance once the print is finished.
- Can I switch from paper to BOPP without changing my press setup?
- Usually with minor adjustments: film runs at lower web tension and needs UV or ink systems matched to the top coat. Request samples of both constructions and run them under production conditions before committing.
Once the construction is decided, both options can be quoted as self-adhesive label stock rolls for slitting and rewinding in your own plant.
