Permanent vs removable label adhesive
Permanent and removable are not adhesive strengths so much as different design targets. Permanent maximises ultimate bond; removable caps it deliberately so that peel force stays low against the intended surface for a defined period.

Choose Permanent adhesive when
- Regulatory, traceability or safety information that must stay on the pack.
- Low surface energy plastics, recycled corrugate or textured surfaces.
- Cold-chain and outdoor applications with a wide temperature window.
- Any application where label loss is more costly than pack damage.
Choose Removable adhesive when
- Seasonal promotions and price marking on smooth retail packaging.
- Returnable containers, totes and crates that are relabelled each cycle.
- Protective or masking labels removed after assembly or transport.
- Glass and rigid plastic where residue would be visible to the end customer.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does a removable adhesive stay removable?
- It depends on the surface, temperature and pressure. Many removable acrylics stay clean for six to twelve months on smooth, sealed surfaces at ambient temperature, but heat ageing and porous substrates shorten that window considerably.
- Is high-tack the same as permanent?
- No. High-tack describes fast initial grab on difficult or textured surfaces. Permanent describes what happens after the bond has fully built. A permanent adhesive can have low initial tack, and a high-tack adhesive can still be removable in the short term.
- Why did a removable label become impossible to peel?
- Usually heat exposure, extended dwell time, or application to a porous or plasticised surface. Adhesive can migrate into the surface and raise peel far above its specification. Test on the real substrate under the real storage profile.
- Can one adhesive cover both requirements?
- Not reliably. Where a pack needs both, converters normally run two constructions, or use a removable base label with a permanent overlay for the compliance information.
Once the construction is decided, both options can be quoted as self-adhesive label stock rolls for slitting and rewinding in your own plant.
